DTDC Franchise Profit per Consignment: How to Calculate It

Work out your real margin on every DTDC consignment: what DTDC charges you (DSR amount, 35% fuel, 1.5% COD, 18% GST) versus what you bill the client, with worked examples.

    Every CN has two prices

A DTDC franchise sits between two bills. DTDC bills you for each booking. You bill your client for the same booking, at your own rates. The two are calculated in completely different ways, which is why the margin is not obvious from either bill alone.

The margin you actually keep is the gap between the two. Everything that follows is about measuring that gap per consignment instead of guessing it from monthly totals.

How DTDC's cost for one CN is built

DTDC's charge for a booking starts with DSR_AMT, the service amount in your booking export. Then:

    1. Fuel: 35% of DSR_AMT. It is charged on the service amount only.
    2. COD fee (COD shipments only): 1.5% of the COD amount, the cash collected from the consignee. It is not charged on the declared goods value.
    3. GST: 18% on the total of the three.

    DTDC before GST = DSR_AMT + 35% × DSR_AMT + 1.5% × COD amount DTDC cost = DTDC before GST × 1.18

How your client price is built

Your side comes from the rate card you agreed with the client. The destination decides the lane (Local, Within State, Metro and so on), the chargeable weight decides the slab, and the slab gives the freight. Your fuel surcharge percentage for that card and lane is added on the freight, and on a COD shipment your COD charge is added too. GST is not part of the line: it is added once on the whole invoice.

Client price (before GST) = freight + fuel surcharge + COD charge

    Worked example: a prepaid parcel

Worked example · 0.5 kg, Within State, prepaid

DTDC side. DSR_AMT ₹60.00. Fuel ₹21.00. Before GST ₹81.00. GST ₹14.58. DTDC bills you ₹95.58.

Client side. Your Within State slab for up to 0.5 kg is ₹93.00, fuel at 30% is ₹27.90, so you bill ₹120.90 before GST.

Margin. ₹120.90 − ₹95.58 = ₹25.32 after DTDC's GST, or ₹39.90 if you claim that GST back as input credit.

    Worked example: a COD parcel

COD changes the picture because both sides add a charge on the collected amount, at different rates.

Worked example · ₹9,085.00 COD, Within State

    DTDC side. DSR_AMT ₹233.50, fuel ₹81.73, COD fee ₹136.28 (1.5% of ₹9,085.00). Before GST ₹451.51, GST ₹81.27. DTDC bills you ₹532.78.

Client side. Freight ₹325.00, fuel at 30% ₹97.50, COD at 2% with a ₹50.00 minimum ₹181.70. You bill ₹604.20 before GST.

Margin. ₹71.42 after DTDC's GST, ₹152.69 before it.

Notice the COD lines. DTDC takes 1.5% of the collected amount, plus GST on it. If you charge the client less than that, you lose money on the COD part of every such parcel, however good your freight rate is. The COD charges guide has a break-even table.

    Where franchise margin usually leaks

    • Wrong lane. A town that DTDC treats as Within State but your rate card bills as Local undercharges every parcel to it. See DTDC zones explained.
    • Actual weight instead of chargeable weight. A light, bulky parcel is charged by its volume. Courier Billing uses the highest of actual weight, volumetric weight and the export's chargeable weight.
    • COD below DTDC's fee. A client on 1% COD with no minimum costs you money on every COD parcel.
    • Missing DTDC amounts. A CN with DSR_AMT empty looks like pure profit until you fill it in.
    • CNs never billed. A booking that was never assigned to a client is DTDC cost with no revenue. Filter Booking Data by unassigned before you invoice.
    • Unpriced CNs. A card or lane with no rate shows “No price”. The app never borrows a rate from another lane, so add the missing row.

Seeing profit per CN in Courier Billing

When you assign consignments to a client, the assignment table shows each CN's client price beside a DTDC (+GST) column computed with the formula above. Rows without a DTDC amount show an “Add DTDC amount” chip. After you invoice, Analytics reports revenue, DTDC cost, profit and margin per client and per month from the same per-line amounts, so the dashboard and the invoice never disagree.

To start, upload your DTDC booking export, set the client's rate card, and open Create Invoice. The live demo has sample data with all of this filled in.

    Frequently asked questions

Is DTDC's fuel surcharge always 35%?

Courier Billing uses 35% fuel and 1.5% COD by default: the rates on the DTDC franchise invoices it was built from. Your franchise agreement can differ, so compare one month of the app's DTDC cost with your actual DTDC invoice. If they disagree, your contract rate is the one that counts.

Should I count DTDC's GST as a cost?

If your franchise is GST-registered and claims input tax credit on DTDC's bill, the GST you pay DTDC comes back to you, so the before-GST margin is closer to your real profit. If you do not claim that credit, the GST is money you never get back and the margin after DTDC's GST is the honest number. Confirm with your accountant which applies to you.

Why is the DTDC amount zero on some consignments?

Some DTDC exports leave DSR_AMT empty for a few rows. Courier Billing still prices the client side, but the DTDC cost shows as missing so the profit for that CN would look too high. Type the amount from DTDC into the DTDC cell on the assignment table and the profit updates at once.

Does a heavier parcel always earn more?

Not necessarily. Your client price rises by slab and DTDC's amount rises too, but at different steps. A parcel just over a slab boundary can cost DTDC more without moving your client into a higher slab if your slabs are wider. Check chargeable weight on your highest-volume weights.

Let the app do this math for every CN

Upload your DTDC booking export and Courier Billing prices each consignment from your own rate card, shows the DTDC cost beside it and builds the GST invoice. Uploads and basic analytics are free forever.
